Success stories of recent Hult graduates

J. Christophe Chort, France
Product Manager,
Johnson & Johnson , United Kingdom
Class of Dec. 2006

"The Hult MBA is truly international not just on paper, but also in the classroom with colleagues from around the world, professors with global experience, and a curriculum focused on global business."

Jean Christophe pursued his MBA to sharpen his marketing skills and shift industries. After several years working in asset management at HSBC, he wanted to get closer to consumer marketing and focus on strategic marketing. The transition was challenging and did not happen overnight. With a clear career objective in mind, he resisted the temptation to accept his first job offer. He now works in the Johnson & Johnson Strategic Marketing Group based in the UK, managing a product line for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He credits Hult's emphasis on practical education and cultural diversity for helping him stand out from the hundreds of MBAs that Johnson & Johnson interviewed.

According to Jean Christophe, "I very much enjoyed the learning experience at this boutique business school. The strong interaction within the small group of international students and the access to faculty enhanced my learning experience."

Jean Christophe's advice for those who would like to change careers is to "have a clear objective of the type of roles you want and do not settle for anything less. Start the job search very early, almost as soon as you start your MBA program. Go to the networking events, MBA recruiting fairs - any person could be a potential contact for a job. Finally, take the time to find the right job and resist the temptation to automatically jump on your first offers."

Sonja Landsiedel,
Regional Sales Director,
Cultural Care Au Pair, EF
Switzerland
Class of Aug. 2006

"I wanted the global exposure at work and Hult really well prepared me for cultural differences."

Growing up in Germany before working all over the world and completing an MBA in Boston seemed to Sonja to be the perfect complement for her love of travel and cultural experiences. (The fact that her classroom seemed to be its own mini United Nations didn’t go unnoticed.) There were obvious reasons Sonja wanted to do an MBA and to her, there were obvious reasons why she chose to experience it at Hult.

For Sonja, an MBA provided her with personal development, international exposure, work place diversity and advancement in career. A change of career was important not because she desired a new industry, but because she wanted a more international working environment to fully exploit her true potential.

Sonja eventually chose to study at Hult because of its diverse and international flavour - its melting pot of cultural lessons and challenges. The appeal of Hult’s professional faculty mixed with its international student body were all too appealing.

After graduating from Hult, Sonja landed a Regional Sales Director position for EF Au Pair, responsible for three countries in Latin America and Europe, a job which provides the management perspectives and the excitement she looks for. She is grateful for the lessons learned in her global classroom at Hult which help her facing cultural communication challenges in this new position.

"If I were to advise others wanting to do an MBA, I would tell them that you have to be authentic. You have to know who you are and what you want to be. I wanted the global exposure and Hult really well prepared me for cultural differences."

She says that a one-year MBA course takes a lot of hard work and energy, but if you use your time to get the most out of your experience, you will make an unforgettable experience and leave a better person for it.

Olivier Sampeur, France
Country Product Manager,
EF Education First, France
Class of Dec. 2006

"The world really is flat! There is so much to learn from other cultures. I have also developed core business skills in areas I had never considered before."

Although he truly enjoyed his time living in the US, Olivier returned to Paris to work for EF Education First, the world's largest private education company. He is now the Country Product Manager for EF's e-learning language platform in France. The fact that the learning experience at Hult includes such international diversity made Olivier the best candidate for this position.

The recruiting process in a large multinational company is thorough. The hiring managers take the time to ensure the candidate is a good fit to the culture and will thrive in the environment. Olivier's hiring process was almost four months long. "At Hult we are so used to dealing with diverse cultural backgrounds and ways of doing business, graduates are able to easily adapt to the working environment and dive into a new role quickly." says Olivier.

While his strong cultural awareness was a major factor in his selection, Olivier believes Hult prepared him for success in more ways than one."Hult's curriculum provides us with many rich and powerful tools, enabling us to be efficient managers as we grasp a solid understanding of today's rapidly evolving marketplace. If you join a very international company, your ability to understand the big picture really helps." Since graduating, Olivier has discovered his education has only begun,"I have spent a lot of time studying the company and getting focused. I have networked internally, meeting with lots of people to understand the company's culture and its expectations."

Max Malaret, Venezuela
Senior Business Consultant,
Liberty Mutual, United States
Class of Aug. 2007

"When you tell an employer this is a one-year MBA program, they are impressed. All the work in half the time demonstrates your ability to produce results under pressure."

Max landed his ideal job five months before graduation. He will be working in the US for Liberty Mutual, an insurance giant ranked 95 among Fortune 500 companies in 2007. Joining the company's Corporate Development Program for MBA graduates, Max will undergo a two-year training program before settling into a specialized role.

The Hult MBA was instrumental in helping to find this dream job. Max began to explore different career opportunities available within the insurance industry in the US. He found that most of the top companies offered leadership development programs, including Liberty Mutual. Max was able to leverage Hult's relationship with the company to provide him with a personal introduction to the recruiter. This was helpful for Max to make a great first impression.

The recruiting process of Liberty Mutual is highly competitive and comprehensive - Max attended multiple interviews conducted in three rounds, including an interview with the CEO. His winning secrets were to "be prepared and to be yourself". According to Max, "You have to have excellent knowledge about the company and a good understanding of the industry basics. Armed with this, you can then ask intelligent questions during the interviews to demonstrate both your interest in the company and the value of your potential contributions. To succeed in your job search you need to be patient, be clear about what you really want and propel yourself forward."
